The Isle of Skye, Scotland
Dunvegan Castle – A
Wealth of Clan History to be seen at the Ancestral home of the
MacLeods.Nowadays Dunvegan Castle, although still the official home of the
MacLeod chiefs, is open to the public. It is the oldest inhabited
castle in Scotland and is one of Skye’s most famous landmarks.. An
audio-visual programme presents an insight into the history of the
castle and is a good introduction to the wealth of clan history on
display at the castle, some dating back to the 15th century.
Among the most unusual exhibits is the Fairy Flag, the sacred banner
of the MacLeods which is surrounded by myth and legend.
Apart from the castle itself visitors can enjoy the extensive gardens
or take a boat trip out to Loch Dunvegan to observe seals at close
quarters.
The Aros CentreAros in Portree offers a variety of options for visitors of all ages.
A new exhibition “Skye the Island” presents historical information
about the Highland Clearances and about the period when Bonnie Prince
Charlie was on the run after Culloden. It also gives a fantastic
audio-visual of the Cuillins and , under the supervision of the RSPB
there are live cameras on the nest of a sea eagle.
Within the centre there is also an art gallery of contemporary
Scottish prints etc and a gift shop and restaurant. You can also enjoy
Scottish music and contemporarey films in the auditorium and for
children there is a creche, soft ply room and an outdoor play area.
The Bright Water Centre. This is where Gavin Maxwell, the author of “Ring of Bright Water”
lived and it now stands as a testament to the great author and his
life’s work. The centre has strong environmental themes and an
interactive style which has won it awards from the Scottish Tourist
Board. The Stevenson lighthouse is the first stop on a visit to the
centre and from the purpose built hide otters and other sea life can
be observed.
While in the area a trip on the glass bottomed boat is an
unforgettable experience.
Day Trips to The Outer Hebrides etcCaledonian MacBrayne ferries sail from Uig in Skye to Tarbert in
Harris and Lochmaddy in Uist. Day trips to these islands can be
arranged or even a stop-over of several days if that is preferred. Day
trips to the Island of Raasay or the small isles (Rhum, Canna etc) are
also easily arranged and a day trip to the village of Plockton where
the television series “Hamish MacBeth” was filmed is well worth while |
