Out & About

Eating Out

There are a number of eating places in the area ranging from bar meals and quick snacks to the world famous Three Chimneys restaurant in Glendale.  Meals may also be booked at Lady Claire MacDonald’s Kinloch Lodge although that involves a car journey of about 1 hour.

Walking & Climbing

Skye is a climbers and walkers paradise. The famous Cuillins are only 20 minutes away by car and guided climbs can be arranged if required. A number of guide books and maps are available and may be borrowed by guests. They give detailed advice on hill walks, coastal cliff walks etc. For further walking information visit Walk Highlands.

Dunvegan Castle

Dunvegan Castle, the seat of the Clan MacLeod, is open all year round. The gardens are open to visitors during the summer months and boats run continually (weather permitting) to give close up views of the seal colonies in Loch Dunvegan.

Portree - The Island Capital

Portree is about half an hour’s drive away and, in addition to the shops, the Aros Centre is well worth a visit where remote cameras and television links allow you to watch sea eagles on their nests.  The centre also has woodland walks, a cinema and a restaurant. Bus tours with drivers who are very knowledgeable about the history and wildlife of the island run twice daily from here during the summer months.

The Western Isles

Day trips to the Western Isles (Harris, Lewis and North Uist) are available from Uig on the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry service.  Meals are available on board.

A Wide Range of Activities

Sea fishing trips can be arranged locally and the Skye Angling Association welcomes visitors to the trout lochs and salmon rivers over which it has the fishing rights. Day permits are available and are inexpensive.

The 9-hole golf course at Sconser is open to visitors all year and is a scenic and challenging test of golf.

Horse riding is available locally.

The area is rich in historical and archaeological sites including Pictish Brochs and ancient homesteads vacated during the infamous Highland Clearances.
